Custom Medical Ultrasound Catheters

There are two main types of ultrasound catheters, intravascular (or IVUS) and transesophageal echocardiogram or (TEE), both of which are used to visualize local anatomy for medical procedures.

Intravascular Ultrasound Catheters

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) catheters provide a 360° view, and can identify the nature of the material being visualized—they can detect the changes in density between hard plaque and soft tissue, for example. They are also used to confirm the device location within the lumen of an artery (the “true” lumen vs. the “false” lumen).

TEE Catheters

Transesophageal echocardiogram ultrasound catheters provide an alternate means of performing an electrocardiogram. They can also provide a clearer view of anatomical structures within the thoracic cavity, such as the atrial appendage, pulmonary artery, heart valves, etc. TEE ultrasound catheters are helpful during the insertion of other catheters, and offer high sensitivity for the detection of blood clots.

DUKE Empirical manufactures IVUS and TEE ultrasound catheters that are tailored to our customers’ application requirements. We work with special materials that are transparent in ultrasound imaging, and can provide RX (rapid exchange) options as needed.
